Early Spring 2018
Evidence of winter burn
The browning and bronzing of leaves on evergreens may show up in late winter and early spring in our area when certain conditions have been present. Very low temperatures, cold winds, reflected sunlight from snow cover, are among these situations. This causes the leaves to dry out, or dessicate, in response to the environment. Even in the winter dormant state, the leaves are still slowly loosing water. Plants are constantly taking up water from the roots, but if the ground is frozen, the water is then made unavailable. This leads to another factor contributing to the dying brown leaves. Warm, sunny days in late winter will prompt the shrub to transpire more quickly, and, again, if the soil still frozen, the water available to the leaves is greatly diminished. The leaves die as a result.
Winter 2018 manifested all of the above conditions here in the Philadelphia general area.
What to do?
Patience is required now; often the stems and leaf buds are still alive. Refrain from pruning until growth begins in spring to determine the true extent of the die back. Removing the dead leaves while leaving the stems may help you visually get through until then since the brown leaves are so unsightly!
There is disagreement on the effectiveness of spraying
anti-dessicants, but I think it is helpful to apply in late fall, particularly on newly planted evergreens, plants in winter containers, or ones that have been susceptible in the past. In future autumns, be sure plants are watered thoroughly & mulched before the ground freezes.
